Pim Mol has been the director of Rabo Foundation, Rabobank's corporate foundation, for a year now. He explains what Rabo Foundation does and what challenges there are for the future.

it’s Rabobank. Because that’s how we started out as well: founded by poor farmers who joined together to form a cooperative, in order to gain access to knowledge and credit. Today, we pass on that work method to the entrepreneurs of the future.

Since 1974, the year Rabo Foundation was founded, we have stood for social issues and the people who desperately need our investments. Vulnerable people, whose ambition to get ahead in life makes them true gamechangers. We are a ‘kickstarter’ to help them realize those ambitions. We offer them access to knowledge, a network, and financial and innovative solutions. In so doing, we invest in their own strength and self-reliance. So that they can stand on their own two feet, and take the next step forward.

Over the years, the social challenges have grown; both for smallholder farmers in developing countries as well as for social enterprises and organizations in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, Rabo Foundation’s mission remains the same: to offer disadvantaged people the possibility of a better life by investing in improving their socio-economic position.
We do that on the condition that they show their own initiative and are willing to invest their own money or labor.

We provide loans under businesslike, commercial banking terms, based on our conviction that when you appeal to people’s own abilities from the very beginning, there’s a good chance that they will eventually be able to manage without external support.
Although our mission remains unchanged, we have undergone a transition over the past few years. Where necessary, we have refined our strategy. We have created the Rabo Rural Fund. And we invest in innovative solutions.

But we can’t do it all on our own either. That’s why we work together with the organizations in which we invest. And we are always looking for other parties to join us, such as USAID and Sociaal Werk Nederland. But we strive to do more, because we believe that major challenges can best be solved when we intensify the collaboration between Rabobank, its employees, and its clients. Their knowledge and expertise are vital in order to find real solutions – together with the experts at Rabo Foundation. That’s why we will continue to look for new collaborations over the coming year.

That starts by explaining who we are and what it is that we do, exactly. That we’re not a charity organization, but an accelerator that adds value to organizations faster, better, and more effectively. And you can read all about it in this annual report.

Fighting poverty, social inequality, and hunger. These are major challenges that we can only deal with when we work together. And if there’s one party who knows how to do that,
