Amounts received

The financial support of Rabobank, clients and employees is vital for the work we do.

Rabobank
Each year, we receive a contribution based on Rabobank’s net profit. In 2019, we received 0.5% of the net profit (15 million euros).

Clients
We have received donations from businesses and private individuals. In 2019, we received 0.4 million euros.

Employees
Each month, Rabobank employees and retirees make a financial contribution to Rabo Foundation. In 2019, we received support from 4,572 Rabobank employees.

Project funding

In 2019, we invested a total of 40.3 million euros in projects, an increase of 6.6 million euros.

The Netherlands

We invested in social enterprises and organizations with a total of 5.6 million euros in 2019.
(2018: 6.2 million euros).

International

In 2019, we invested 31.2 million euros in producer organizations and savings and credit cooperatives (2018: 25.2 million euros).

Innovation

As part of our innovation program, we have invested in agtech and fintech innovations since 2018. In 2019, our contributions rose to 3.4 million euros (2018: 2.3 million euros.

Types of financing

We offer organizations five types of financial and other support.

Our most important tool is the loan. In 2019, we issued a total of 28.3 million euros in loans (59%). We offer several variants of loans, so that organizations know exactly what they need. In the Netherlands, we issue (soft) loans to social enterprises. Internationally, our loans give organizations the opportunity to issue microcredits to farmers. The farmers then use the credit to invest in their farms.

Ons belangrijkste instrument is de lening. In 2019 verstrekten we totaal 28,3 miljoen euro aan leningen (59%). Daarvan bieden we meerdere varianten aan, zodat organisaties precies krijgen wat ze nodig hebben. In Nederland verstrekken we (zachte) leningen aan sociale ondernemingen. In het buitenland geven de leningen organisaties de kans om microkredieten te verstrekken aan boeren. De boeren gebruiken deze kredieten om te investeren in hun bedrijf.

In 2019, we issued 3.6 million euros (8%) in trade financing to help farmers’ organizations to bridge the period between buying a product from the farmer and selling the product in the (export) market. Thanks to these short-term loans, organizations can buy more of the farmers’ produce and pay them on time.

We often provide additional technical assistance to help the project partners professionalize their operations. This assistance includes training courses on bookkeeping, agricultural techniques and crop diversification. In 2019, we provided a total of 3.2 million euros in trade assistance (7%).

We issue bank guarantees internationally to help cooperatives obtain loans from local banks. We issue most of the guarantees in India, where local legislation prevents us from issuing loans directly to groups of farmers. In total, we provided 7.9 million euros in guarantees in 2019 (16%).

Organizations

To make people all over the world more self-reliant, we invest money, knowledge and our network to help organizations in the Netherlands and 22 developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

We support savings and credit cooperatives and producer organizations in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru.

In 2019: 73 organizations with a total amount
of 9.8 million euros.

Latin America

In 2019, we provided a total of 10.5 million euros in funding to 90 organizations. We are active in seven countries in Asia: Cambodia, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

We have two local teams working at the Rabobank offices in India and Indonesia.

Asia

In the Netherlands, we support social enterprises that work to help people who are not connected to the job market. We also support social organizations that help prevent people from falling into debt, or to identify debt-related problems in time.

 In 2019, we supported 109 organizations with a total amount of 5.6 million euros.


The Netherlands

We are active in the African countries of Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Senegal and Tanzania. We invest in savings and credit cooperatives and producer organizations, to help them become more efficient and professional.

2019: 118 organizations, with a total contribution of 10.9 million euros.

Africa

Rabo Rural Fund

Rabo Foundation set up Rabo Rural Fund in 2011, and it still manages the fund today. The impact lender finances farmers’ cooperatives that have outgrown Rabobank Foundation, but are not yet eligible for regular bank loans.

The Rabo Rural Fund has more than 50 companies and cooperatives in its portfolio. The fund mainly issues short-term loans (trade financing) which are used for the buying and processing of goods. The amount of the loans varies between 200,000 dollars and 3 million dollars per client. 

In 2019, the fund lent more than 49 million dollars, and the loan portfolio increased by 7.9 million dollars.

The Rabo Rural Fund is active in 16 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.


Distribution by region

The fund finances organizations that want to grow, but are not eligible for commercial financing from banks. The focus of the Rabo Rural Fund is on providing financing for these producer cooperatives, but the share of SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) in the portfolio is growing.
