‘Wij willen dat organisaties op termijn financieel zelfstandig worden. Uit ervaring weten we dat hiervoor geduld nodig is. Toen we Chetna in 2010 ondersteunden, dachten we dat twee tot drie jaar voldoende zou zijn. Maar de organisatie heeft te maken met grote uitdagingen, zoals een grillige markt. Ook vinden commerciële financiers kleinschalige boeren te risicovol. Partnerships bleken een belangrijke succesfactor. Zo kon Chetna de risico’s spreiden en haar financiële situatie verstevigen. Daarnaast ontwikkelden we een uniek garantieproduct waardoor we garant konden staan voor een lokale Indiase bank, die op haar beurt Chetna werkkapitaal verstrekt. Waar een commerciële bank tevreden is als ze een klant binnenhaalt, zijn wij enorm blij dat Chetna nu terechtkan bij een andere commerciële bank.’

Cinnamon is a spice made from the inner bark of the cinnamon tree. The only disadvantage is that after the harvest the tree needs ten to twenty-five years to grow. This means that a farmer can only earn an income from the cinnamon trees two to three times in his life. This means that other sources of income are also important for farmers in the meantime, so that they have a stable income and can create better living conditions.
